    Why Won't My Garage Door Close? — Orlando, FL

    If your garage door starts down and then reverses back up, the cause is the safety sensors about nine times out of ten. Those are the two photo-eyes mounted near the floor on either side of the opening, and when the beam between them is broken — or the opener merely thinks it is — the door refuses to close. Before you call anyone, there are four checks that resolve most cases in about five minutes.

    Four Checks Before You Call Anyone

    1. Look at both sensor lights. Both should be lit and steady. One dark or flickering light identifies the problem immediately.
    2. Clear the path. A trash bin, a bike wheel, a coiled hose, a stack of boxes — anything crossing the beam counts, and it doesn't have to be obvious.
    3. Wipe both lenses. Florida garages accumulate dust and pollen on the lens surface, and a film is enough to weaken the beam.
    4. Check for a bump. Sensors sit at shin height and get knocked by cars, bikes and lawn equipment constantly. Even a few degrees of misalignment breaks the connection.

    If the light on your opener's motor unit blinks a repeating pattern, that's a diagnostic code. Count the blinks in the cycle and check the number against your opener manufacturer's chart — it's in the manual and on the manufacturer's support site. A sensor fault is one of the most common codes.

    The Central Florida Version: It Only Fails in the Afternoon

    Here's the one that gets misdiagnosed constantly, and it's specific enough to this region that most online troubleshooting guides never mention it. The door closes perfectly every morning. Every afternoon it refuses. Nothing is in the way, both lights look fine, and by evening it works again.

    That's sunlight. The photo-eyes work on an infrared beam, and low western sun shining directly into the receiving eye floods it with infrared — enough that it can no longer distinguish the beam from its transmitter. The opener reads that as a blocked path and reverses. It affects west-facing garages, and it gets worse from roughly October through February as the sun angle drops, which is exactly when homeowners assume the opener is finally dying and start pricing replacements.

    The fix is a small shield or hood over the receiving sensor, or repositioning the eye a few inches so the direct sun no longer lands on it. It's a minor job, and it's not a new opener. If you've been quoted an opener replacement for a door that only misbehaves in the afternoon, get a second opinion first.

    Do Not Disable the Sensors

    Every so often someone asks us to just bypass the photo-eyes so the door will close. We won't, and neither should anyone else. Entrapment protection has been federally mandated on residential garage door openers manufactured since January 1, 1991 under 16 CFR Part 1211, and the photo-eye system is what stops a closing door on a child, a pet, or a bike left in the path. A garage door is the heaviest moving object in most homes.

    There's a holding-the-button-down override on most openers for genuine emergencies, and that's the extent of it. If the sensors are faulty, they get aligned, repaired, or replaced. Every job we finish gets a reversal test before we leave — we put an obstruction under the door and confirm it reverses.

    When It Isn't the Sensors

    If both sensor lights are solid and the path is genuinely clear, the next suspects are the opener's travel and force limits — settings that tell the opener how far to travel and how much resistance means "stop." These drift over time and are adjustable on the motor unit. After that, look at the track: a bent section or a roller starting to bind creates resistance the opener interprets as an obstruction.

    One symptom to treat differently — if the motor strains and the door barely moves or feels extremely heavy, stop using it.
